How to get from Maputo – Tofo : My take on Fatimah’s Shuttle Bus

Tofo beach is popular in Mozambique for diving. It is almost natural for travellers to travel from Maputo (the capital of Mozambique) to Tofo as part of their itinerary for exploring Mozambique. However, Tofo is not a stone’s throw away from Maputo. It is situated 450kms north of Maputo and takes around 8-10 hours by bus. There are a few ways to get to Tofo. By Flight The closest main city to Tofo is the city of Inhambane, about 20kms from Tofo. There is an international airport in Inhambane and there are daily flights from Johannesburg and Maputo to Inhambane. Alternatively, one can fly to Vilankulos which is a 4…

A Guide on travelling from Johannesburg to Maputo : via Intercape bus and getting visa on arrival in Mozambique

Context When we were planning our trip, we decided that the most efficient way was for us to take an overnight bus to Mozambique, Maputo specifically. We decided to leave exploring Johannesburg for the last few days of our trip as our flights were a return trip to Johannesburg and there was an Intercape overnight bus to Maputo. As Maputo, the capital of Mozambique was really close to Johannesburg and Nelspruit, it was a no-brainer to explore travelling overland to Mozambique. Therefore, this was our plan. Our trip was on Dec 2017. Upon landing in Johannesburg, we had half a day to change some money, sight-see or meet a couchsurfer…

Stok Kangri (6,153m) : My first high altitude summit

Introduction Stok Kangri was my first high altitude trek. I had no real experience going past 4,000m, the highest being Kinabalu (4095m) and the longest time I have stayed outdoors in the mountains was during Rinjani for 3 days and 2 nights. To set the context, my initial plan was not to go to Stok Kangri, but a Markha Valley Trek and paying a visit to Ladakh because I had heard and read so much about it. Luck had me link up with random people who were intending to do a summit trek, all 1st timers, so I decided to join in. The group of us consisted of me, Darren,…

Leh : What to do in and around Leh

Leh (3524m) is the capital and the entry point into the Ladakh region for Stok Kangri (one of the most accessible 6,000m peaks), Markha Valley or any of the Indian Himalayan peaks. Leh is situated in between the three parallel ranges of the Himalayas, the Zanskar, the Ladakh and the Karakoram as well as the 3 rivers, the Shyok, the Indus and the Zanskar Rivers which flow between these ranges. Littered with fluttering Tibetian flags, surrounded by dramatic and unforgettable landscapes, Leh is an amazing place to visit. Getting in Road-Trips Leh is connected by road via the National Highway 1 to Srinagar or via the Leh-Manali highway to Manali in the south. Both…
