Victoria Falls is one of the world’s seven natural wonders, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and straddles across 2 countries, Zambia and Zimbabwe. There are 2 sides to it, the Zambia and Zimbabwe side. The Falls are 1.7 km wide with a vertical drop of 100 metres. The spray of the Falls can be clearly seen from a distance of 30km the locals call it “Mosi-oa-Tunya” means “The smoke that thunders”. Mount Semeru (3,676m): All You Need To Know About Hiking The Great Mountain ‘Mahameru’

Introduction Mount Semeru (3,676m) is the highest mountain in Java and also an active volcano that erupts a plume cloud every few moments. It is also called “Mahameru”, which means the Great Mountain or where the gods reside. It is easy to see why because of its imposing stature and constant eruption. Having said that, it is safe (relatively ha!) to hike it despite it being active, as long as the national park allows it. It is said to be similar in difficulty to Rinjani, although some dispute and say that it is tougher. Most itineraries are a 3D2N trek. It is very similar to Rinjani having 3D2N and 4D3N,…

Mount Merbabu (3,145m): A Detailed Guide to Hiking Mount Merbabu

Mount Merbabu (3,145m) is a dormant stratovolcano, located on the Java island of Indonesia nearby Jogjakarta. The name Merbabu is also known as the ‘Mountain of Ash’ from the Javanese combined words; of “Meru” for mountain and “awu or abu“ for “ash”. To me, Mount Merbabu (3,145m) is like the calm quiet sister to the temperamental and fiery Mount Merapi (2,930m) which lies right across it. It is often overshadowed by the presence and popularity of the more famous Mount Merapi. Comparatively, there are very few foreigners or Singaporeans who would attempt Mount Merbabu. However, it is an extremely popular destination for locals due to the numerous camping points and various trek routes. The Mount Merbabu trek takes around up(1 way)…

Gunung Datuk (885m): The “Beginner” Trek to Malaysia Mountains

Mount Datuk (885m) is located at Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, about an hour away from Malacca. It is one of the most popular treks in Malaysia for both locals and Singaporeans due to the accessibility and ease of doing it. It is also one of the shortest treks in Malaysia but with a challenge and a view at the top. If you ask me, it is one of the best short treks from Singapore. especially for anyone who wishes to get out, or you are a nature or adventure seeker looking for some exercise over the weekend. You can also easily pair it with sightseeing and extremely good food in…

Kilimanjaro(5,895m) is a dormant volcano located in the heart of Tanzania that can boost two mighty titles, the highest mountain in Africa as well as the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Here is a post on all the details you need to know on Kilimanjaro as well as the factors and decisions you need to make for a trip to Kilimanjaro. If you wish to know more in detail about what the trek is like, check out my Lemosho 7 day trek! If you are looking for someone to arrange your Kilimanjaro…

Kilimanjaro (5,895m): Lemosho 7 Days Route

Kilimanjaro(5,895m) is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Additionally, it is a dormant volcano and located in the heart of Tanzania. Everest might be the ‘holy grail’ of all mountains, but Kilimanjaro is the ‘holy grail’ of trekking mountains. Firstly, its location is in a continent known to as the cradle of mankind due to being near (relatively) South African and Ethiopia. Africa is a pretty mythical region due to the lack of knowledge and information for most tourists. I know I am stretching it, but Holy Grail, Africa, Cradle of Mankind, Kilimanjaro, all these do add up to sound like some ignorant…

Getting from Tofo – Nelspruit : My experience with Tours2moz

We had completed our dive in Tofo and were done with Mozambique. It was time to make our way back to Nelspruit in South Africa. Now the question was, how were we going to get out of Mozambique/Tofo? There was no way we were taking flights because of the cost. The thought of taking the same Fatimah’s shuttle back to Maputo, before trying to find a transport from Maputo to Nelspruit was unappealing. If we had to take public transport, it would be a nightmare of transfers and full of unknowns. We would have to take an early morning Chappa to Inhambane (no idea what time it opens or where to…

How to get from Maputo – Tofo : My take on Fatimah’s Shuttle Bus

Tofo beach is popular in Mozambique for diving. It is almost natural for travellers to travel from Maputo (the capital of Mozambique) to Tofo as part of their itinerary for exploring Mozambique. However, Tofo is not a stone’s throw away from Maputo. It is situated 450kms north of Maputo and takes around 8-10 hours by bus. There are a few ways to get to Tofo. By Flight The closest main city to Tofo is the city of Inhambane, about 20kms from Tofo. There is an international airport in Inhambane and there are daily flights from Johannesburg and Maputo to Inhambane. Alternatively, one can fly to Vilankulos which is a 4…

A Guide on travelling from Johannesburg to Maputo : via Intercape bus and getting visa on arrival in Mozambique

Context When we were planning our trip, we decided that the most efficient way was for us to take an overnight bus to Mozambique, Maputo specifically. We decided to leave exploring Johannesburg for the last few days of our trip as our flights were a return trip to Johannesburg and there was an Intercape overnight bus to Maputo. As Maputo, the capital of Mozambique was really close to Johannesburg and Nelspruit, it was a no-brainer to explore travelling overland to Mozambique. Therefore, this was our plan. Our trip was on Dec 2017. Upon landing in Johannesburg, we had half a day to change some money, sight-see or meet a couchsurfer…
