All You Need To Know About Hiking Mount Kerinci (3,805m): Indonesia Highest Volcano!

Introduction Mount Kerinci (3,805 m) is the highest volcano in Indonesia and the highest mountain in Sumatra.  It is still an active volcano and is part of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, the largest national park in Sumatra Island, Indonesia and also home to the endangered species of Sumatran Tigers and Rhinoceros.  Luckily or unluckily, you don’t get to see Sumatran Tigers or Rhinos, that is the other side of the mountain where it is of course off-limits to casual hikers like us. Having done many Indonesian mountains before this, Kerinci was not high on my priority list. I have heard that it wasn’t that pleasant a trek and didn’t have…

Planning A Trip to Mount Kerinci (3,805m): Indonesia Highest Volcano!

Introduction Mount Kerinci (3,805 m) is the highest volcano in Indonesia and the highest mountain in Sumatra. It is surprisingly quite straight forward to plan a trip to hike Mount Kerinci, the only difficult thing being deciding the transport options. Mount Kerinci is still an active volcano and is part of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, the largest national park in Sumatra Island, Indonesia and also home to the endangered species of Sumatran Tigers and Rhinoceros.  The trek can be quite a strenuous 2D1N climb. The altitude gain is longer than I expected. Be prepared for a raw experience and a muddy climb through the thick foliage of the jungle. It also gives…

Mount Semeru (3,676m): All You Need To Know About Hiking The Great Mountain ‘Mahameru’

Introduction Mount Semeru (3,676m) is the highest mountain in Java and also an active volcano that erupts a plume cloud every few moments. It is also called “Mahameru”, which means the Great Mountain or where the gods reside. It is easy to see why because of its imposing stature and constant eruption. Having said that, it is safe (relatively ha!) to hike it despite it being active, as long as the national park allows it. It is said to be similar in difficulty to Rinjani, although some dispute and say that it is tougher. Most itineraries are a 3D2N trek. It is very similar to Rinjani having 3D2N and 4D3N,…

Hiking Mount Agung (3,031m) – See The Milky Way With The Mother of Volcanoes

Mount Agung has huge spiritual significance to the people of the island, being the home to the ‘Mother Temple’, temple of Besakih. According to Wikipedia, it “dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate. The clouds come from the west and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green while the east dry and barren.” Balinese legend has it that Agung was created when the Hindu God Pasupati split Mount Meru (the spiritual axis of the universe) and formed Mount Agung with a fragment. 2020 Update: Agung is still not open for hiking due to its constant volcanic activity. This has been the case for a few years.…

Hiking Mount Batur (1,717m) – The Appetizer to Trekking in Bali

Mount Batur Mount Batur is an active volcano at 1,717 metres. Most visitors do the sunrise trek or hike, which means doing a night climb and watching the sunrise from the summit (if you make it in time). The climb is extremely suited for beginners, with a great view at the summit, a variety of scenery and trail which makes it slightly fun as well. The only downer is that it is usually misty/rainy but that adds to the feel of it most of the time.  It is a good warm-up to Mount Agung. It is an easy climb of about 1.5h up, ending with 15-20 mins of volcanic ash which…
